I've been looking forward to tommorow for a year, hoping for tommorow all of my life. I don't think I'll have a happier or more uplifting day in my life.
And yet, here I am, angry, disappointed and cynical all over again.
Local TV here in Oregon announced the shocking news that Mayor Sam Adams had confessed to having an affair with an intern which he denied two years ago.
This is far, far worse than slick goody-goody John Edwards getting caught having an affair, with the accompanying maudlin context of a tragic wife with cancer and a baby from the affair.
This is far, far worse because Sam Adams is the first openly-gay mayor of a large US city. He is intelligent, charismatic, strongly liberal and was a trailblazer in unifying a city and getting people to follow him. We had great hopes for him.
And in ten seconds in a local segment, it all falls apart. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!!!!! It's Clinton all over again. WHY? WHY oh WHY must these men (I'm a woman) disappoint us so? Why did he have to lie???
I do not want this to be the end of Sam Adam's political career. It's possible that it won't be. But you know what? This is the age of Barak Obama. This is the age where we expect more from our sleazy politicians. We expect more on this day, a day we celebrate the life of a man who stood on the steps of the nation's capital forty five years ago and delivered the most inspiring, soaring speech the world has ever heard, whose life sets the standard that we aspire to.
We expect more from this day on. From this day on, I will not stand for lying, evasive politicians. From this day on, I will not support a government that shreds its own constitution, that invades other countries violating international law, that violates its own principles.
From this day on, I don't care how important it was to have a Sam Adams in office. He lied to protect his own career. He left his party and his supporters hanging out to dry, and an important election year cycle at risk. I'm tired of these people. No more. No more.
Sam Adams was sworn in as Portland mayor in the beginning of this year.
Barak Obama will be sworn in as the President of the United States tommorow. I will follow one, and not the other. No more, no more, no more.
