Received this e-mail today from former Governor Ted Strickland’s (D. OH) U.S. Senate campaign:
Last week, voting rights in Ohio got a HUGE win:
An Ohio federal court struck down a GOP-led ban on our "Golden Week" of early voting in Ohio. "Golden Week" allows eligible voters to register and cast an absentee ballot on the same day -- it's a powerful force to encourage voter participation across Ohio. And Judge Michael Watson recently ruled that the ban violated both the U.S. Constitution and the 1965 Voting Rights Act. I couldn't agree more!
But this voting rights victory may be short-lived if we don’t act quickly. Right now, Republicans including Attorney General Mike DeWine want to appeal the ruling and stop Ohioans from early voting during "Golden Week." We must unite and demand that they let this voting rights victory move forward -- they've already asked for a stay on the ruling.
Sign my petition urging Attorney General Mike DeWine to uphold the U.S. Constitution and the 1965 Voting Rights Act and ensure fair voting across Ohio and America.
Sadly, it should be no surprise that Republicans across Ohio are focused on making it harder to vote. It's been a pattern we've seen from John Kasich, from Rob Portman, and now from DeWine and even the Secretary of State. It's time to be loud and clear that making it harder to vote is not just wrong, it's un-American.
Judge Watson's ruling was a huge win, but the fight isn't over. Unless DeWine allows the Ohio federal court order to move forward, we face yet another attack on our voting rights as Republicans continue their blatant attempts to undermine our democratic process in 2016 -- we can’t let that happen.
That's why I'm asking you to sign on and demand DeWine allow "Golden Week" voting to be restored.
Ohioans -- and voters across the country -- deserve access to the polls. Governor Kasich and Rob Portman have a long history of supporting the GOP's pattern of voter suppression, and now it's Secretary of State Husted's and Attorney General DeWine's turn to act. That's why I hope you'll join me and demand that they protect "Golden Week."
Thanks,
Ted
